Picasso's on Walcott has something new on the menu – a dish served with lots of colour, abstract forms and tastes to suit everyone’s palate – and its on the walls!

Artists in Arms and Picasso’s (formerly The Church Restaurant), two creative forces have joined to present a unique opportunity to merge a fine dining experience with a preview of the latest artistic works by some of the most up and coming artists in WA, with the underlying theme of raising funds for youth in crisis.

All artwork displayed is available for purchase – so slink into the casual ambience, sip on a refreshing drink and sample dishes from Picasso’s creative and unique menu and enjoy these wonderful artworks and buy. Current artworks on display are by Judith Brooks, Alba Cinquini, David Giles, Marie Hammat, Sue Leeming, Lawrence Marshall, Annie Rawle, Diana Selentin and Julie Wilkinson all showing at Picasso’s on Walcott Bar and Restaurant from 7 December till 16 February 2008.

Artists in Arms (AinA) was founded 2 years ago and is a not-for-profit foundation established in Western Australia with full charity status as defined by the Australian Taxation office.

Under its charter, AinA promotes the work of emerging and established artists by regular exhibitions, the internet and other avenues. Part proceeds from the sales of their works are directed to supporting our designated charities in the main dealing in the areas of youth in crisis.

These are:

Youth Focus (www.youthfocus.com.au) - a West Australian, non-profit community based organisation working with young people 12-18 years of age who are showing early signs associated with suicide, depression and self-harm, and;

Mercy Ministries (www.mercyministries.com.au) – a non-profit community based residential facility for girls who are dealing with problems such as eating disorders, unplanned pregnancy, depression, abuse and addictions. It exists to see young women aged 16 – 28 years reach their full potential and overcome these life-controlling issues.

Picasso's on Walcott is about funky, casual, cool and relaxed.
Located on the corner of Walcott and Curtis Streets in Mt Lawley Perth, in an old church building complete with enormous vaulted ceilings, vast stained glass windows and an intimate mezzanine floor, we offer one the most unique venues in Australia paired with great service and Australasian inspired cuisine beautifully presented in a tapas style. Picasso's on Walcott is quite unlike anything else in Perth!

Trip to Ross River.

ROSS RIVER – Private Charter Art Trip to Ross River in the East MacDonnell Ranges.
7th August to 16th August, 2008. (Fly into Alice – tour group will be picked up from Airport on 7th and departure is from Alice Springs airport on morning of 16th).

ARTISTS are invited, and will be made very welcome, by Sandrifter Safaris, a professional tour group who will take us to the magnificent ranges that reveal a variety of geological formations. There’s a great number of shady sites to work in, including the wide sandy river bed with its majestic River Red gums; plains of spinifex, cassias and mulgas and the bare contours of the uplifted ranges and the rocky outcrops in the Sphinx area. Nearby N’Dhala Gorge has unique Aboriginal rock engravings and is well worth a day visit. There is also the opportunity to visit Trephina Gorge for the day.

There will be a “bus run” each morning and people and their gear will be dropped off where they choose. Normally the group elects to work in a specific area before moving onto the next after a couple of days. Most days there is a lunch run and then a pick up at the end of the day so you can be out all day if you like, or you can choose to stay around and work near camp.

Camp: Sandrifter will set up a camp site including kitchen, large shade shelter, tables and chairs, solar lighting and refrigeration and soft-backed camp chairs for relaxing around a campfire. You will have a tent to yourself which you can stand up in, a stretcher, mattress, sleeping bag, pillow, bed linen and tent light. Also available, if required, are painting stools, drawing boards and paint water bottles. Some easels may be borrowed (check with Sandrifter when paying your deposit). There’s a large amenity block with flushing toilets, and hot showers. Remember all this equipment is transported by the tour organizers, for our convenience.

Meals: are from the comprehensive, purpose-built, camp kitchen; usually a continental breakfast with a cooked breakfast every few days; lunches of sandwiches, cold meats and salads, evening commences with drinks and nibbles with a two course meal to follow. A range of beverages, fruit and snacks are provided during the day. Red and white table wine is provided with the evening meal. If you wish to purchase other alcohol (such as beer/spirits) please let Sandrifter know as Alice Springs has introduced restricted alcohol laws. Special medical dietary requirements and preferred diets can normally be met, but remember this is a group and the tour organizers carry all of our supplies for the whole trip. Please contact Sandrifter if you wish to discuss dietary requirements.

On the last afternoon there will be an exhibition of everyone’s work.

Cost, and Payment: Cost of trip will be $1850 per person, plus airfare to and from Alice (a group booking is being costed for this trip). Payment of a $300 deposit will secure your place (remember there’s a MAXIMUM of 18 on this trip) – balance prior to end of March. Tax invoices will be issued. Meet Belinda (desk bitch extrordinaire), Sally (Life of the party and I have given up smoking have you got a cigarette and partner of Robert Jenkins...Damn that guy has so much talent he should be shot) and the lovely Zoe. (Ok she is my daught and therefore the absolute best of them all..and I am not biased...Honest).

No really they all bring so much individually to us and AinA. We totally love them all.

Memory is a funny thing. Already I cannot actually seem to remember what the site looked like before we started on it. And it was only 3 weeks ago and we have been open for a week and a half. Yes we really did make the difference!

I dunno what to say about Maris. Zoe and Fran were at the site in the set up stages on their own. Maris arrived in his bongo van and Zoe thought that he was some random feral that was about to load up the exhibition and kidnap them both....Well she does have a very active imagination.

In reality though as a sculptor, and as a very intelligent and dedicated human being, he is an inspiration to myself and many others. We are honoured to have him with us. And the fact that he has ladders, and drills and things and knows how to use them is a total bonus.

The best thing about Yas...well there are actually a couple.

The first is that she can paint like a demon. Not "Art" painting but "cover a wall with paint" type painting. Again another artist that nothing is too much trouble and her snse of humour and her laugh just lift the whole thing. Oh and she is a kick arse artist too. Her attention to detail and fine work is exemplary. (Dunno if I spelt that right)

One of these days I am going to find her a baby grand to do her work on! Liberace would have killed for her to do it.

Oh well at least we got to meet some great people today and it looks like Fran has found another person to give her some help on the admin side. Woop.

Edgar Hoppe

Edgar is selling like hot cakes. And he always has a big grin and something nice to say.

The way it looks at the moment he is going to have a sell out this exhibition and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

I don't know how he paints the way he does. But his works are very unique and they just seem so happy and full of life. Just like Edgar I guess.

We finally made it

After two weeks of intense work and a great help from those who volunteered we finally opened on Friday night.

It was amazing to see how a disused and abused old nightclub could come alive with the vibrancy of art and music filling it.

Yes it was there.

Yes it was hell ugly.

And yes it is now dedicated to the parking lot in the realm of things that were a great idea at the time.

I am not sure who's great idea it was. In fact I am not sure it was ever a great idea.

Still Harrison thought it was pretty cool when I managed to get it over the balcony: and it suffered permanent cranial damage on the concrete floor below.

Fact is I think some of the grown ups had a little bit of Harrison going on at this tiem as well.

Jean and June open their exhibition "Windows of the Soul" at Fusion in Mandurah on the 3rd of August at 6:00pm.

Featuring their shimmering glass mosaics with every piece fired in their kilns to achieve the unique colours they want.

They have been very busy of late with commision pieces and getting their works ready for this exhibition. We look forward to seeing their work in the AinA at the Old Berlin Exhibition.

I just heard that Judy Brooks was awarded most outstanding entrant in the KCGM Mining Award category of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Art Prize held in the Boulder Town Hall. It runs until Sunday 3 December. Her entry was a mixed media on paper titled Cassidy Shaft. Congratulations, Judy, its great to hear one of our own doing good.

One of our very own, Ray Palmer, is embarking on a seafaring adventure. He is a member of the anti-whaling group the Sea Sheperd Society and will be sailing away on the good ship Farley Mowat. They are going to try and put a spanner in the works of those illegal whalers. While onboard, as well as his regular duties, Ray, is going to further his photography portfolio by shooting his environs. It should be a great adventure. We wish him well and hope he stays safe. Onya Ray!!!

Yesterday I was up at Karrinyup Shopping Center and stopped in at Riot's Art & Craft store. I was chatting to one of the staff and she asked me if I taught Art. Apparently they have been inundated with requests for Art classes north of the river. So , hey, you guys....if anyone is interested, stop by and drop off some business cards.They will be more than pleased to pass them on.

Has anyone noticed that the last couple of editions of STM...the liftout from the Sunday Times...has not had one review or notice of any Art exhibitions. I know when they did there was'nt much room allocated to it but, now its totally absent. I did notice though that on the second last page they have inserted a whole new page of horoscopes....and you know how important they are.....hmph...mumble...mumble....

Picasso and Ray.

I went to Melbourne a couple of weeks ago. Brian and I flew in late on a Thursday night, checked into our Hotel in the city and went to bed. The next morning we dressed and went down for breakfast. As we passed reception we saw a couple walking in our direction. I thought " that face looks familiar" and all of a sudden blurted out "Ray...What are you doing here?" I could'nt believe it. Of all the places, of all the Hotels, there was Ray Palmer. He was staying at the same place. Two Artists in Armers. We had a bit of a chat . He was looking for telescope stuff on that day and I was looking for Art supplies ( I did find a good place...Senior Art Supplies). We ran into each other the next day as well . So I was'nt the only one missing out on the AinA party. I could swear here but I'm too much of a lady....
Anyway Brian and I had a great time in Melbourne. We did some shopping...whoo hoo...I saw an exhibition of portraits at the Crown Casino, talked to an artist at the art markets for an hour or so....very interesting....and to top it all off we went to the Picasso exhibition at the National Gallery. It was very comprehensive. One of my favourite rooms was where there were photographs of the different stages of the making of "Guernica". It was brilliant to see his work and in particular his paintings up close.

I was wondering if any of you Artists in Armers are watching Rolf Harris's Star Portraits on Tuesday nights on the ABC. I have found it a most enjoyable half hour. Three artists are picked to paint a portrait of a famous person and then that person has to choose which they would like to have hang in their home. It is most interesting to see each artists approach and execution of the task at hand and the portraitee's choice is also very revealing in itself. I also see that another show Art Safari is starting tonight on the same channel...Will have to give that one a looksee too.

On Tuesday evening the trustees will be meeting to thrash out the calender for the coming AinA events.

Anzac Day Panels

On ANZAC Day this year a group of AinA artists got together and painted a series of panels for an exhibitition one of their members was putting together as a precursor to the Inaugural Exhibition. This is a selection of some of those paintings. A small number have been sold but soon the remainder will be exhibited in a brand new gallery space. So stay tuned and we will be bringing you more news closer to the opening.
